HiveMQ Cloud Serverless End of Life

HiveMQ retires the HiveMQ Cloud Serverless plan on 2026-12-31. The retirement applies to all Serverless Free and Serverless Pay As You Go clusters:

  • You can no longer create a Serverless cluster or upgrade a Serverless cluster to Pay As You Go.

  • After 2026-12-31, MQTT clients can no longer connect to your Serverless clusters.

  • After the end-of-life date, HiveMQ permanently deletes all Serverless clusters and the data on the clusters.

HiveMQ does not move your MQTT clients, data, or configuration automatically. To avoid service interruption, move your MQTT clients to a new broker before the end-of-life date.

Get a Free Migration License

If you received the Serverless retirement email from HiveMQ, you can claim a free Migration license for a self-managed HiveMQ Enterprise Broker:

  • The Migration license allows 100 concurrent connections and 100 messages per second for 12 months.

  • After 12 months, the Migration license continues as a free Lab license.

  • You do not need a credit card.

To claim your license, open Connect in the HiveMQ Platform.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does My Serverless Cluster Run Until 2026-12-31?

Yes. Your Serverless cluster runs until the end-of-life date. Until 2026-12-31, you can manage access credentials and permissions, view the connection details, and delete the cluster.

You cannot create a new Serverless cluster. If you delete your Serverless cluster, you cannot create the cluster again.

What Happens to My Data?

After 2026-12-31, MQTT clients can no longer connect to your Serverless cluster. After the end-of-life date, HiveMQ permanently deletes the cluster and all data on the cluster. The deleted data includes retained messages, client sessions, access credentials, and permissions. HiveMQ cannot restore a cluster after the deletion.

What Is the Migration License?

The Migration license is a free license for the self-managed HiveMQ Enterprise Broker. With a self-managed broker, you install and run HiveMQ on your own servers, virtual machines, or Kubernetes. HiveMQ does not host a self-managed broker for you.

For 12 months, the Migration license allows 100 concurrent connections and 100 messages per second. After 12 months, HiveMQ converts the Migration license to a free Lab license. The conversion keeps the same license key. Your broker continues to run with the converted license. However, the license limits change to the limits of a Lab license, currently 25 concurrent connections and 25 messages per second.

To get more capacity at any time, upgrade the license to a paid Launch or Run plan.

Who Can Claim the Migration License?

You can claim the Migration license if your HiveMQ user account owned a Serverless cluster when HiveMQ announced the retirement. The cluster can be a Serverless Free or a Serverless Pay As You Go cluster. HiveMQ sent an email about the retirement of the Serverless plan to every eligible user.

Each user account can claim the Migration license one time. If you delete your Serverless cluster, you can still claim the Migration license.

Eligibility belongs to your user account, not to your organization. Other members of your organization see the offer only if their own user account owned a Serverless cluster when HiveMQ announced the retirement.

How Do I Claim the Migration License?

You need permission to create licenses in your organization. To have time to test your new broker, claim the Migration license before the end-of-life date.

To claim the Migration license, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to the HiveMQ Platform and open Connect.

  2. On the Run HiveMQ on your own infrastructure, free card, click Get Migration license.

HiveMQ issues the license immediately and opens the broker deployment wizard with the new license selected.

  3. In the wizard, follow the steps to deploy your broker.

What If I Do Not See the Migration License Offer?

If you think that your user account is eligible, contact HiveMQ support.

Every HiveMQ user can claim a free Lab license for the self-managed HiveMQ Enterprise Broker. A Lab license allows 25 concurrent connections and 25 messages per second.

What Are My Other Options?

You can choose one of the following options instead of a free license:

  • A self-managed HiveMQ Enterprise Broker with a paid plan. For production use or more capacity, choose a paid Launch or Run plan.

  • A fully managed HiveMQ broker. For a broker that HiveMQ runs for you, see HiveMQ Cloud Enterprise.

How Do I Move My MQTT Clients to a New Broker?

To move your MQTT clients from a Serverless cluster to a self-managed HiveMQ Enterprise Broker, follow these steps:

  1. Claim a Migration license or a Lab license.

  2. Install and start the HiveMQ Enterprise Broker with your license key. For instructions, see Install HiveMQ.

  3. On the new broker, configure authentication and authorization to match the access credentials and permissions of your Serverless cluster.

  4. In each MQTT client, update the hostname, port, credentials, and Transport Layer Security (TLS) configuration to the values of the new broker.

  5. Test your MQTT clients with the new broker.

  6. Delete your Serverless cluster.

Your new broker has a different hostname than your Serverless cluster. Use a hostname under a domain that you control. Then you can change the broker address later without an update to each MQTT client.
